Welcome to the photography of Stan Johnson, a photographer with more than 35 years
of professional experience. This site highlights just some examples of Stan's
professional, personal, experimental and fun photography.
Stan Johnson began taking pictures as a youth in upstate New York and developed an
interest in journalism while working as a carrier for his hometown newspaper. After
graduating high school, Stan served as an information specialist in the U.S. Army at
Fort Knox, KY and Herzogenaurach, West Germany. Following the military, Stan
achieved an Associate of Arts in Communications and Media Arts from Dutchess
Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the
University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
Stan worked for several years as a journalist and photographer for newspapers
including Inside the Turret (Fort Knox, KY), The Gamecock, the Vetletter and the
Beaufort Gazzette (all while at the University of South Carolina), The Lancaster News
(Lancaster, SC) and The Courier-Standard-Enterprise (Fort Plain, NY). Stan also
contributed stories and photos to magazines including Castle Rock (the Stephen King
newsletter in Bangor, ME) and The Buzz (a music magazine in Albany, NY).
After leaving journalism, Stan worked for several years in film labs before beginning a
career as a school, wedding, sports and event photographer for various companies,
including Ramark-Varden Studios of Albany and Schenectady, NY, Lauren Studios of
Albany, NY, Artist Image Studio of Coconut Creek, FL, Lloyd Studio of Boca Raton, FL,
McGrath/Character Arts Studio of Saratoga Springs, NY and McGrath/Hallmark Images
of Turner's Falls, MA. Currently, Stan works for Carlyn Studios of Schenectady, NY.
Stan's work has taken him to elementary and high schools, colleges and universities
throughout the eastern United States from Maine to Florida, where he has
photographed thousands of students since 1987. The photography has included
portraits of college and high school seniors, elementary school underclass, class
groups, sports teams and action, proms, family portraits and corporate events. During
this time Stan also photographed more than 300 weddings.
During his career, Stan photographed with 35mm, medium format and 70mm film
cameras and processed black & white and color negative and slide film. He also printed
most of his own black & white prints. Since his conversion to digital technology, Stan
now uses digital cameras, both Canon and Nikon, and edits images using computer
programs.
Stan's interest in photogaphy education has continued with the Professional
Photogaphers Society of New York, the Schenectady Photographic Society, and the
Palm Beach Photographic Center in Del Rey Beach, FL, where Stan volunteered as
workshop teaching assistant.
Stan's interest in music began with seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, an event which
eventually resulted in his playing bass for fun in bands, open mic and jam sessions. At
some point Stan also began photographing musicians, although he has only
photographed a fraction of the concerts he has attended.
Lately, Stan has been dabbling using Photoshop and a Wacom tablet to combine
comic-book style illustration, another interest from his youth, with photography. Stan is
experimenting with images that are neither exactly photography nor illustration, but a bit
of both.
Stan now lives in the Mohawk River Valley and travels throughout the capital region and
upstate New York for photographic adventures.
Look on this site in the future for examples of Stan's images.
